Visceral fat vs. Subcutaneous

Visceral fat vs. Subcutaneous

Oct 03, 2023JOSE RODRIGUEZ

As a nutrition expert and founder of Healthyholic, a healthy meal prep company in NYC.

Above all, I can tell you that while all body fat isn't inherently evil, visceral fat—the "hidden" fat wrapping your organs. Therefore it is the one we need to focus on.

Subcutaneous fat, in other words, the pinchable kind is mostly cosmetic and serves as insulation.

On the other hand, visceral fat is metabolically active and directly linked to serious health risks, for instance, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

That is to say, from my decade of experience helping New Yorkers get healthier, managing visceral fat through disciplined nutrition which is why I started Healthyholic is the single most critical step in improving long-term health.

Firstly - my journey from the gym floor to Healthyholic's kitchen

My perspective on health is rooted in experience, but not just textbooks. It all started when I acquired a supplement store near a gym in the Bronx.

I saw countless people working hard but struggling with one core issue: consistent, convenient nutrition.

Consequently, that experience, combined with my wife Daniela's personal struggle with weight gain in the city, fueled my commitment to solving the "convenient, but unhealthy" meal problem.

As a result, this is why Healthyholic exists—to provide macro-balanced, ready-to-eat meals across NYC, Westchester, and Manhattan, making the critical nutritional battle easier.

The truth is, even with all the supplements and gym hours in the world, if you aren't addressing what you eat, certainly you're losing the war against deep fat.

Subcutaneous vs. visceral fat: location is everything

When we talk about body fat, we're talking about two very different things:

Subcutaneous fat

This is the fat that sits right beneath your skin.

It's the soft, jiggly fat you can literally pinch on your arms, thighs, or stomach. To clarify is that this fat is primarily an aesthetic concern.

It’s useful for cushioning and regulating body temperature.

However, excessive amounts aren't ideal, it's generally considered less hazardous to your internal health than its deeper counterpart.

Visceral fat

Most importantly, this is the real danger lurking inside.

It’s located deep within your abdominal cavity, surrounding vital organs like the liver, pancreas, and intestines.

Unlike subcutaneous fat, you can't pinch it.

It's metabolically active, meaning it releases inflammatory substances that interfere with normal hormone function.

Meanwhile, leading you on the fast track to metabolic syndrome.

visceral fat

Why visceral fat is the enemy?

In my opinion, the data is undeniable.

Based on observational data from Healthyholic customers over the past eight years—many of whom came to us seeking nutritional guidance after routine health checks.

We've consistently seen a correlation between high visceral fat levels in addition to poor metabolic markers.

Visceral Fat Level (VFL) Index

Prevalence of Health Markers (Healthyholic Customer Data, NYC - 2018-2026)

Low (VFL 1-5)

92% maintained healthy blood sugar levels.

Moderate (VFL 6-10)

45% reported elevated blood pressure or cholesterol.

High (VFL 11+)

78% were diagnosed with or at high risk for metabolic diseases (e.g., Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease).

What does this tell me? If you focus on reducing that invisible, deep-seated fat, similarly, the rest of your health metrics tend to fall into place.

My simple solution: Healthy meals help fight visceral fat

Here’s what I know for certain: you can’t out-train a poor diet. So, that’s a lesson I learned firsthand while building this business.

The single most effective strategy for managing and reducing visceral fat is consistent, high-quality nutrition.

This is where Healthyholic’s pre-prepared, vacuum-sealed meals truly shine.

Controlling calorie intake:

My meals are meticulously portioned with precise macronutrient counts, removing the guesswork that leads to overconsumption.

Balancing macronutrients:

We focus on lean proteins and complex carbohydrates.

High-protein, fiber-rich diets are proven to increase satiety and stabilize insulin levels — moreover a key factor in visceral fat reduction.

Eliminating processed foods:

The convenience of our prepared meals replaces the need for fast food.

Also highly processed options, which is often loaded with inflammatory ingredients that promote visceral fat storage.

I don't know the exact mechanism by which one person’s liver stores fat versus another’s, because every body is different.

But I do know that by consistently providing the right fuel, we give the body the best chance to prioritize burning fat, starting with the most dangerous kind.

Measuring your risk: don't guess, test

How do I measure my own progress and how do I recommend our clients measure theirs?

While simple tools like bioelectrical impedance or skinfold measurements can give you a starting point.

For overall body fat, they are notoriously inaccurate for tracking visceral fat.

If you are serious about your health, I strongly recommend a professional assessment:

  • DEXA Scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry): This is the gold standard. It gives a precise, three-component breakdown of your body: bone density, lean mass, and fat mass, clearly differentiating between subcutaneous and visceral fat.

  • Waist Circumference: A quick, reliable proxy. For men, a waist circumference over 40 inches (102 cm) and for women, over 35 inches (88 cm), is generally considered a strong indicator of high visceral fat levels.

I believe in transparency and measurable results.

This is why when you visit any of our Healthyholic locations in NYC, we often offer resources for getting a DEXA scan (or similar measurement) to establish a clear baseline.

The Healthyholic promise

To sum up, after a decade in this business, my perspective is simple: you can’t afford to ignore the internal battle.

Subcutaneous fat might bother you when you look in the mirror, but visceral fat is actively undermining your health from the inside out.

My experience, supported by the data we’ve collected, shows that the most powerful weapon against this deep fat isn't a complex supplement.

Neithir a grueling fad diet—it's consistency through honest, healthy meals.

I founded Healthyholic because I believe that convenient, high-quality nutrition is the cornerstone of true health transformation.

Take control of your visceral fat, get tested to know your baseline, and let us handle the meal prep.

In conclusion, the power to change your health is on your plate!
